Applicability of Profession Tax in Karnataka
- Every establishment must be enrolled to obtain the Professional Tax Registration certificate.
- All the salaried employees earning more than Rs. 15,000.00 are to be charged a professional tax. The professional tax for a salaried individual will be deducted by the employer from the salary.
- Applicable to Business entities such as Sole proprietorship, Partnership firms, Limited Liability Partnership, Corporations, Hindu undivided family (HUF), Firms, Company, other Corporate bodies, Society and Club or Association.
Exemption from Profession Tax in Karnataka
- No profession tax is deductible or payable by the employer for an employee who has been employed for less than 120 days.
- No profession tax can be levied on an employee who has attained 65 years of age. Certain categories of employees like persons having a single child, physically handicapped person, combatant member of armed forces etc. are also exempted by virtue of the notification issued by the Government subject to terms and conditions laid down in the relevant notifications.
- Individuals with a gross annual income of less than Rs. 2,50,000 are exempt from tax.
